A composite photograph highlights subtle changes to the Moon's brightness as it enters the Earth's outer shadow (penumbra) at about 1.08am (bottom left) and reaches its peak at about 3.10am (top right).

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon enters the Earth's penumbra without touching the darker inner shadow (umbra). This causes one side of the moon to appear dimmer without becoming completely dark.

This morning's penumbral lunar eclipse is the first of six eclipses expected this year, four of which would be visible from Malaysia if weather permits.
