Anti-Icerd rally ends peacefully

The rally against the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd) in Kuala Lumpur ended peacefully. Malaysiakini estimates 80,000 people attended the rally at its peak.

Protesters remain doubtful about whether Putrajaya is rejecting Icerd for good, or merely postponing its ratification.

Seasoned street activist Ambiga Sreenevasan lauded the rally's organisers and police for ensuring a peaceful event.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad reiterated that the government would not ratify Icerd.

Mahathir said he would not attend tomorrow's Human Rights Day celebrations organised by the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) due to opposing views on Icerd.

Mahathir said even angels make mistakes when asked about Pakatan Harapan's policy flip-flops.

Mahathir said there would not be a cabinet reshuffle soon.
