The vaccination plan
Malaysia’s vaccination plan is finally taking shape.
Frontliners will be vaccinated in March. The old and sick in May. The rest of Malaysians in August. Our guide explains in more detail.
Here’s the progress of Putrajaya’s vaccine orders and the population that they can cover:
Pfizer-Biontech (95% efficacy):
37.9 percent of Malaysians
Sinovac (50.4% - 91.25% efficacy):
18.75 percent of Malaysians
Sputnik V (91.4% efficacy):
10 percent of Malaysians
Astrazeneca-Oxford (62%-90% efficacy):
10 percent of Malaysians
Pfizer-Biontech is an American-German initiative, Sinovac is China’s, Sputnik V is Russia’s and Astrazeneca-Oxford Is UK’s.
There are challenges, such as varying efficacies and the EU’s threat to block exports. But Malaysia is buying more than needed for herd immunity and negotiating for extra.

Emergency measures unveiled
Got Covid-19? You can now get treated at private hospitals, if you can pay. Your insurance won’t cover you, yet.
The government is still negotiating with insurance firms which are reluctant to cover the cost.
Sixteen national service camps will be converted into temporary detention centres to reduce overcrowding in prisons and immigration facilities.
Chief secretary-general Mohd Zuki Ali announced the emergency measures from home quarantine after being exposed to a Covid-19 patient.
Civil servants are now also required to sign off “Emergency to fight Covid-19” in their letters.

Home learning hurdles
The government promised 150,000 free laptops under Budget 2021. They’re more important than ever as most students learn from home under MCO.
But there are complaints, including from Umno, that it’s not moving fast enough.
MPs are scrambling to find data plans and laptops for needy students in their constituencies.
Yayasan Hasanah, the foundation under Khazanah Nasional Berhad that is managing the free laptops programme, promised the first batch next month.
Higher Education Minister Noraini Ahmad said her ministry also distributed 3,773 devices and 195,000 data plans. There are an estimated 4.8 million students in primary and secondary schools.
