Covid-19 (May 23): 1,544 new cases, 2 deaths

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry reported 1,544 new daily Covid-19 cases yesterday.

Both new cases and hospital admissions of Covid-19 patients have been trending down over the past week.

Active cases currently stand at 25,148, up 9.6 percent compared to 14 days ago.

New cases according to the states are as follows:

Selangor (828)
Kuala Lumpur (113)
Penang (93)
Malacca (86)
Johor (83)
Perak (75)
Negeri Sembilan (63)
Kedah (55)
Sabah (43)
Putrajaya (38)
Sarawak (27)
Kelantan (13)
Terengganu (13)
Pahang (12)
Perlis (1)
Labuan (1)

Another two deaths attributed to Covid-19 were reported yesterday, both in Selangor.

Over the past week, an average of 3.6 people were reported to have died of Covid-19, while the average for the past 30 days was 5.1, indicating that Covid-19 deaths are on the downtrend.

Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, a total of 35,645 deaths have been attributed to Covid-19.

There have been 98 reported Covid-19 deaths this month. For comparison, there were 564 deaths last month and 2,235 deaths in March.

There are 1,078 Covid-19 patients who are hospitalised, of whom 39 are in intensive care.

While the number of admissions has been trending down slightly over the past week, the number of patients in intensive care is stable.

The highest number of admissions yesterday was recorded in Selangor (128) followed by Johor (100) and Sabah (49).
