The Cabinet has condemned the Feb 1 mob "attack" in Johor against Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman and urged the authorities to uphold the rule of law sans exceptions.

In a statement tonight, it noted that everyone, including states, were subject to laws in the country.

“The authorities must uphold the law in a transparent and strict manner, they should not compromise on anyone who has been found flouting the law.

“Only government officials have the right to issue orders. If the orders are contrary to the law and standard operating procedure (SOP), they do not need to be acted upon.

“The government will not hesitate to take action on any quarters, including states that do not respect the country’s laws as well as those who do not adhere to government orders.

“The rule of law must always be followed,” it said in a statement entitled “the principle of rule of law”.

Syed Saddiq and his parents were previously approached and heckled by about 200 gatecrashers at a Johor Bersatu Youth gathering in Ulu Tiram, Johor.

The minister had to flee the scene by jumping over a fence.

He later lodged a police report and alleged that the mob was linked to Umno, a claim that the Opposition party denied.

Umno Youth lodged a counter-report and demanded that Syed Saddiq apologises for his claim or risk facing a lawsuit.

The police have since detained three people in connection with the incident.

The case is being investigated under multiple sections of the Penal Code - 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 355 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, otherwise than on grave provocation), 357 (assault or criminal force in attempt to wrongfully confine a person) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
