When Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled Vision 2020 during his first tenure as prime minister, a 15-year-old Khairy Jamaluddin imagined many things about the future.

Among them, the now 43-year-old Rembau MP said, was his imagination that cars would be flying in 2020.

"When Vision 2020 was introduced, I was only 15 years old. Amongst my many teenage imagination at the time was that there would be flying cars in 2020.

"So I would like to congratulate the minister for not postponing flying cars until 2030 under the Shared Prosperity Vision. He is the only minister to keep his Vision 2020 promise," Khairy told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Khairy's sarcastic comment was in response to Entrepreneur Development Minister Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof who said a prototype would be ready for launch at the end of this year.

Khairy had wanted to know about the ministry's preparedness in terms of the ecosystem and supporting industry to support flying cars based on Redzuan's timeline.

Redzuan, in his reply, said Cyberjaya has been identified as a test pad for innovative technology, including autonomous drones and air mobility.

"This test pad platform will ensure there is a conducive ecosystem for the development of air mobility in Malaysia," he said.

He added that his ministry has begun engagement in the direction of the industry with the relevant stakeholders.

He also reiterated that it will be a public sector initiative.

"I would like to state here that if we were to travel to Penang (from KL), it would take four hours.

"The private sector and entrepreneurs have begun a discussion with high tech providers to make it possible to get to Penang within an hour by using flying cars," he said.
