Negri govt insists it wants waste centre relocated or closed

The state government is insistent that Kualiti Alam Waste Management Centre (KAWMC) be relocated or shut down, said Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Aminuddin Harun.

Aminuddin (photo), who is also the Negeri Sembilan Pakatan Harapan chairman, said the move was in line with the state Harapan's manifesto in the 14th General Election.

"In the manifesto during GE14, we made it clear that we will ask the Federal Government to relocate or close the centre.

“After winning the GE14, we still hold on to that promise. But if we close the centre now, where are we going to dump the waste?

“We can’t just dump it into the river. The Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin has already said preparations for this must be made by the federal government, ” he told a press conference after chairing a state executive council meeting in Seremban today.

Aminuddin said this when asked to comment on the state government's next course of action following a fire at the centre on Oct 2.

The fire was the second incident after the first fire in 2015, and the local community is worried that the air quality is highly contaminated due to chemical emissions.

Aminuddin said the KAWMC was a sensitive issue and would take a while to resolve.

"It may take a while but the promise to the people will be honoured," he said.
