MACC chief Latheefa Koya has tarnished the commission's reputation by making a political remark at a law conference yesterday, said PKR vice-president Chang Lih Kang.

This came after she urged politicians to prove their commitment to institutional reform and not merely talk about it.

Chang reminded Latheefa that she was no longer a politician after quitting PKR the day after she assumed office in June.

As such, she should stay neutral and not take sides, he said.

"She is now a civil servant who should hold to the principle of not taking sides with any political party, moreover a certain political leader. The attitude of issuing a sneering remark will only lead to suspicion and worry on the general public regarding her professionalism.

"Under the spirit of Malaysia Baru, all political parties and civil servants should take the responsibility to help the government to reinstate the public confidence in the enforcement agencies.

"This is not going to happen if the party entrusted with the job is not showing professionalism in achieving the goal set," Chang added.

Speaking at a law conference yesterday, Latheefa said some Pakatan Harapan leaders lacked a thorough understanding of judicial independence and freedom of expression, but merely spoke about these constitutional principles in “pretty speeches”.

On this, Chang said: "I seriously condemn such unprofessional practice that had tarnished the reputation of MACC."

He urged the Bar Council and NGOs to look into such political remarks seriously as it will affect the public confidence in the MACC.

"I urge the MACC chief to act maturely in executing her duties and only focus on matters related to her profession," Chang added.
