The act of selling MyKad's and birth certificates to foreigners is a "huge betrayal" to the country, says Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

"The Home Ministry will not compromise with anyone involved directly or were accomplices in this matter," he said in a statement today.

Muhyiddin was commenting on news that 20, including National Registration Department officers, were involved in a syndicate selling identity cards and birth certificates to foreigners.

They were nabbed in Penang on Aug 19.

On Thursday, six individuals, including a Penang NRD assistant director and a businessperson with the title Datuk, were slapped with 32 charges for selling these documents to foreigners.

The charges were filed under Section 26E of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007, which carries a jail sentence of up to 15 years, fine of not less than RM50,000, or both, if found guilty.

Muhyiddin said he has ordered the NRD to cooperate with the police and MACC in any further investigations.
