Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has called on Malaysians to sign a petition calling for a ban on Chinese educationists' group Dong Zong, which he claimed was racist.

He said he was visited by a relative of Bersatu Youth exco member Muzzammil Ismail who sought his advice over the petition to ban the group.

“I received a visit from one of Muzammil's relatives. He asked for an opinion on their efforts to demand a ban on Dong Zong.

“I fully support the effort. I urge all Malaysians to sign a petition supporting a ban on the racist group Dong Zong, ” said Asri in a Facebook post tonight.

Bersatu Youth launched an online petition calling for the ban four days ago claiming that Dong Zong was intent on harming public unity.

Gerakan Pengundi Sedar (GPS) also launched a similar petition asking that Dong Zong be banned.

Dong Zong was seen as one of the vocal opponents to the planned introduction of the compulsory teaching of the khat script for the Standard Four Bahasa Malaysia syllabus.

Following a strong pushback from non-Malay communities, the Education Ministry later decided that the implementation be subject to the consent of parent-teacher associations and students at vernacular schools.
