The Johor cabinet has decided to follow Putrajaya's lead in defining 'youth' as those aged between 15 and 30.

This comes a day after Johor Menteri Besar Dr Sahruddin Jamal issued a statement stating that the state government would maintain the definition of 'youth' as those between 15 and 40.

Sahruddin said this following the amendments to the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act 2006 by Parliament.

In a statement today, Johor exco Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali said the state government would abide with the policy decision by Putrajaya and the Pakatan Harapan leadership council.

"We realise that the changes to the law will have implications on youth movements, especially in terms of registration (of members).

"We stress that this is a legislative matter. It is not policy," he said.

According to Sahruddin's statement yesterday, the Johor government was in favour of keeping the definition of youth at 40 to promote idealism, activism and intellectualism.

He added that many government-funded programmes also targeted the 18 to 40 group.
