The Royal Malaysian Police (PRDM) has issued a stern warning over a fake social media post falsely claiming that Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman issued a statement stating that people aged 31 years and above were senior citizens.

"The entry has been circulating in social media and triggered various citizens' reactions, however, the lawmaker has denied the matter through an Instagram entry," said the police post.

On Wednesday, the Dewan Rakyat passed the Youth Societies and Youth Development (Amendment) Bill 2019 (Act 668), which reduced the age limit from 40 to 30 years.

The bill was tabled by Syed Saddiq, who is also Youth and Sports Minister, and was passed after almost five hours of debate by 17 government and opposition MPs.

Despite some netizens taking the story in jest, the police made it clear that it takes the issue seriously.

"You will face action under Section 233, the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1998 for abusing the communications and social media services.

"A person who commits an offence under that section on conviction shall be liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding one year or both, and shall also be liable to a further fine of one thousand ringgit for each day the offence continues after conviction," it stated.

It also put a link to Syed Saddiq's denial entry on twitter.
