There is no need for Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail to relinquish the deputy prime minister’s post for her husband Anwar Ibrahim to become prime minister, says PKR Youth secretary Chua Wei Kiat.

Chua, the assemblyperson for Rawang, wants Pakatan Harapan to respect the transition plan which had been agreed upon.

"The agreement in Harapan is for Wan Azizah to remain as deputy prime minister, and Dr Mahathir Mohamad to be the prime minister until handing over the position to Anwar," he said in a statement today.

"This agreement was brought up again and received unanimous support during the PKR annual general assembly last year, even though Wan Azizah had just relinquished her position as party president."

Chua released the statement to rebut Bersatu Jeram assemblyperson Mohd Shaid Rosli’s call for Wan Azizah to hand over the deputy prime minister's post to her husband.

Shaid said that Anwar becoming the deputy prime minister was a necessary step for the handover of the prime minister’s post to happen.

“Harapan leaders should not create confusion, and instead provide enough space for the transition process, which is currently being discussed by Mahathir and Anwar, to happen,” Chua said.
