The MACC has nabbed another 22 Penang RTD officers who were suspected to be part of a lorry protection racket in the state.

The officers, aged 32 to 55, had allegedly collectively received RM10,000 per month to protect errant lorry drivers and their vehicles. They had received over RM140,000 thus far.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Azam Baki confirmed the arrests.

The MACC will seek to remand the 22 officers tomorrow.

Previously, 23 Penang RTD officers had been detained in connection with the same racket.

Bernama previously reported that the officers would leak information on RTD enforcement operations to the lorry drivers.

The drivers would also be provided with special stickers so they could be easily identified and exempted from action.

The MACC said today that it may summon the Penang Road Transport Department director and top management to assist in its investigations if deemed necessary.
