Abdul Fareed Abdul Ghafoor has been elected as Malaysian Bar president for the 2019/2020 term, sources told Malaysiakini.

The Penang-based lawyer was the outgoing vice-president and previously chaired the Penang Bar.

Outgoing secretary and human rights lawyer Roger Chan Weng Keng was elected as vice-president.

Outgoing Perak Bar chairperson Surindar Singh was elected as treasurer while outgoing Selangor Bar chairperson Salim Bashir Bhaskaran is the new secretary.

The Bar held their 73rd AGM at Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA, in Kuala Lumpur today.

Earlier today, The Star reported that the bar was expected discuss Court of Appeal judge Hamid Sultan Abu Backer’s affidavit which detailed claims of judicial misconduct.

Hamid had alleged several instances of judicial impropriety and accused certain judges of colluding with politicians and private entities to swindle public funds, triggering the government to form a Royal Commission of Inquiry on the matter.

Outgoing Bar president George Varughese also tabled two motions to be voted on - one calling for the immediate repeal of draconian laws and another calling for the Institutional Reforms Committee’s report to the government to be made public.
