There is no smoke without fire, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang regarding the allegation of a plot to remove Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister through a vote of no confidence.

This is despite Pakatan Harapan leaders, including those from Mahathir's own party Bersatu, dismissing the allegation as baseless.

However, Hadi claimed that PAS received information regarding the move against Mahathir.

“We have information (on the vote of no confidence against the prime minister) and that is why we are expressing our support… there is no smoke without fire,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Hadi, who was speaking to reporters in Terengganu this morning, was commenting on PAS' pledge to back Mahathir if a vote of no confidence is moved against the latter.

The Marang lawmaker said this is to ensure that Mahathir continues with the Islamic leadership.

“We provide the support for the sake of Islamic leadership,” he added.

Yesterday, Mahathir said he wanted to see if PAS would keep its promise to support him if there was an attempt to oust him.

Previously, both PKR president Anwar Ibrahim and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng denied their respective party's involvement in the alleged plot and accused PAS of attempting to deflect attention from the claim it received RM90 million from Umno.

On Wednesday, banners had surfaced in Kuala Lumpur calling on Mahathir to resign and proclaiming Anwar as the eighth prime minister of Malaysia.

PKR has blamed the banners on Harapan's political rivals.
