Dr M hopes for new king soon, needs audience on 'certain matters'
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is hoping that the Conference of Rulers will elect a new Yang di-Pertuan Agong as soon as possible.
According to Bernama, Mahathir said the election must be expedited because he needs to have an audience with the Agong on certain matters.
However, Mahathir did not elaborate on these matters.
Commenting on Sultan Muhammad V's resignation as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Mahathir said the government accepted the decision, as it is in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
The prime minister said the Conference of Rulers had rules and procedures pertaining to the succession of the Agong, which are enshrined in the constitution.
Asked about Sultan Muhammad V’s successor, Mahathir said he would not interfere in the matter, and that the final decision lay with the Conference of Rulers.
"We (government) will not interfere in this matter. The next Yang di-Pertuan Agong will be determined by the Conference of Rulers.
“I do not know how it is done and according to their (Malay rulers) tradition, they have their own arrangements,” he added.
Meanwhile, commenting on the performance of the current cabinet ministers, Mahathir said overall he was satisfied with how they were doing.
This morning, the rulers held a special meeting in Istana Negara. It is believed the state monarchs met to choose a date for the Conference of Rulers to convene again to elect the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Until then, Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah, who is the deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong, will serve as acting Agong.
