BERSATU AGM | Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has poured cold water on any possibility of Umno becoming part of a unity government.

"Some still think that as a party they can join up with another party and have enough numbers to form a unity government. Some leaders think they can lead this new unity government

"All these hopes are for nought, they are just daydreams, dreams of something without basis that will not happen.

"Umno has been destroyed, destroyed by greedy leaders who thought men can be bought with cash," Mahathir said in his policy speech at the Bersatu general assembly in Putrajaya today.

It was not clear what Mahathir was referring to. However, many Umno leaders have quit the party over the past months in a bid to join Mahathir's party Bersatu.

BN secretary-general Nazri Abdul Aziz also said he had met with Mahathir's designated successor as prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, to strike a deal.

Nazri claimed that Anwar had agreed to spare Umno from dissolution in exchange for support for him as prime minister when he takes over.

Nazri also said that Umno leaders would only be a government-friendly bloc and not part of the government.
