Activist and seasoned rally attendee Ambiga Sreenevasan has lauded the organisers of today’s anti-Icerd rally, as well as the police, for ensuring a peaceful event.

"I congratulate the organisers and police for a peaceful rally. Welcome to New Malaysia," she said on Twitter.

Lawyer N Surendran, meanwhile, lauded media coverage of the event.

"Nice to see live coverage of an oppositon rally on TV. This is truly Malaysia Baru.

"Umno-BN please hang your head in shame! You never allowed coverage and demonised rallies," he tweeted.

Tens of thousands had flocked to downtown Kuala Lumpur today to celebrate Putrajaya's decision to spike plans to ratify the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).

Umno and PAS leaders at the rally estimate that 500,000 people turned up for the rally.

Police, however, had a more conservative figure of 55,000.

Malaysiakini's own estimate was that there was 80,000 people at the rally’s peak around 3pm.
