Malacca police have instructed that security at all houses of worship in the state be stepped up in the wake of the rioting at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Selangor.

Malacca police chief Raja Shahrom Raja Abdullah said today the move is aimed at preventing any quarters from taking advantage of the situation to create trouble.

He also said that state police have received 71 reports on the incident at the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in USJ25, Subang Jaya, believed to have been triggered by its proposed relocation.

As many as 37 of the reports were made in Jasin, 23 in Melaka Tengah and 11 in the Alor Gajah, he told reporters after the monthly assembly at the state police headquarters.

Raja Shahrom also reminded the people in the state against using social media to circulate messages of a racial nature, saying this could undermine public order.
