MP SPEAKS | Malaysian politics achieved two new records of sorts within 48 hours – both highlighted by none other than the new MCA president Wee Ka Siong.
In the first instance, Wee had captured the essence when he said that the Umno president Zahid Hamidi had been turned into a “laughing stock” after his overture to PAS for an Umno-PAS merger were ignored.
Wee said: "To see PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang (ignore such overtures) is embarrassing... to me (Zahid) is a laughing stock.
"I want to marry you, but you refuse. What does that mean?" he said when met at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
On Saturday, during a joint Umno-PAS rally in Pasir Salak, Zahid openly said it was time for the two parties to "merge", but this was rejected by PAS.
The second event was provided by Wee himself, who said that Zahid’s overture for a Umno-PAS merger was a “betrayal” of Barisan Nasional.
Pleading that BN component parties should at least be consulted before Zahid made the overture of a merger to PAS, Wee pleaded: “Please reserve some respect for MCA and other BN parties concerning this matter.”
Two beggaring statements within 48 hours, the first one by the Umno president to PAS and the second one by the MCA President to Umno.
Wee complained plaintively that Umno was only interested in pursuing Muslim votes, although the BN is multi-racial in outlook.
He said: "Their angle is: 'non-Muslim voters are no longer important'. Where is the spirit of the coalition?
"We want a new Malaysia. We want multiethnic political parties."
But the greatest irony of all is that MCA is not a party open to all ethnic groups in Malaysia!
What has Malaysian politics come to – producing two “laughing stocks” within 48 hours.
