Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin has decided to tell it like it is to former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak after the latter refused today to acknowledge the role of the 1MDB scandal in BN's election defeat this year.

"We lost because of 1MDB. The end," Khairy said in a Twitter post.

Khairy was responding to Najib, who earlier today met with supporters and attributed BN's defeat in the 14th general election to a slew of reasons.

"We lost because of lies, slanders, and empty promises. If there was an even playing field, I believe that Umno could win," the former premier said while addressing some 1,000 supporters at Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Najib had not mentioned 1MDB in his speech.

Khairy, who was the former youth and sports minister, had previously stated that he had regretted not telling Najib about Umno’s rejection by the grassroots while the pair had still been in government, following the sacking of Muhyiddin Yassin and Mohd Shafie Apdal.

Najib led BN to its first defeat in 61 years since independence in the May 9 general election.

The coalition's defeat came amid complaints of rising living costs and allegations that billions of ringgit in 1MDB funds had ended up in his personal bank accounts.

Najib has denied taking public funds for personal gain and maintained that the billions of ringgit in his bank account was a "donation".
