Yoursay: KL mayor’s ‘broom award’ worked if it has brought sweeping changes
ADS

YOURSAY | ‘Nor Hisham should be the last appointed KL mayor, the next ought to be elected.’

New KL mayor tears up when recalling 'broom' incident

Kickstart: I beg to differ with newly appointed Kuala Lumpur mayor Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, who said that receiving the ‘broom award’ from former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo when he was in the Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) contributed to the defeat of BN in Selangor.

Sometimes tough tactics produce results, which it did in this case. If everybody is patting everyone’s back and giving wishy-washy compliments, the job will not get done. This is happening in many government departments.

If somebody fails in his job, call him out. It’s just too bad that Nor Hisham was on the job for only three months before getting the broom. Suck it up and get on with the job.

Mano: This new mayor says BN lost in Selangor partly due to the ‘broom award’? Never, never allow government servants to praise or run down any political party. They should always remain neutral. This mayor failed the first test of being a civil servant. I am no fan of BN or Khir, but I believe government servants should be bipartisan in their words and actions.

Ferdtan: People must not give up when they are insulted in public by bad bosses. Karma works in mysterious ways. Nor Hisham is having the last laugh. He is now the new KL mayor while Khir always will be remembered as a convicted criminal.

Annonnymous 080: Why appoint a retired person for Kuala Lumpur mayor? If I am not mistaken, when we wrote to Nor Hisham as the then-president of Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ), none of our letters were acknowledged or answered. Plus, he seemed to be a good friend of all the developers in nearby areas – ‘Tan Sri Sunway’, ‘Tan Sri Tropicana’, ‘Tan Sri Bandar Utama’ etc! What a bad choice this government has made.

Cocomomo: The Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL) needs a substantial clean up. Act without fear or favour. There has been a massive approval of projects without due consideration for the adequacy of supporting infrastructure and the environment. Please stop all projects, including approved ones being done by GLCs, and reassess.

What?Meworry?: The first order of business for the new mayor: Get rid of the little Napoleons in DBKL.

Zzz: Congratulations to the new mayor. Yes, the old problems are all still there. Flooding after the rain, traffic congestion, parking issues, poor road conditions, etc. No need to spend millions on flower pots and kerbs and paving the roadsides with tiles again and again. Do that when the more immediate problems are solved. I hope you can do a better job.

Pakcik Am: Local government is government. It must be headed by a politician answerable to the rakyat, not the executive. It ought not to be headed by a civil servant. There should be a government by the people, for the people, of the people.

Wira: Nor Hisham should be the last appointed mayor of KL. The next mayor ought to be elected.

Newday: Nor Hisham, very best wishes in your new and hopefully innovative endeavours at DBKL. It is a big task – reinvigorating the broken systems, recharging staff with the purpose of focusing on the community first, breaking down the silo mentality between departments. You have my full support.

Anonymous_cdb4fb5d: For the past five months, Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad and the Kuala Lumpur Harapan MPs have been sleeping. Nothing has improved or changed in Kuala Lumpur. The roads are still massively jammed throughout the day. Illegal parking, narrow, potholed roads are all there. Go look at Segambut, it resembles a war zone. Learn from Singapore to make Kuala Lumpur a liveable city. The Segambut MP is now a deputy minister, so she has no time for Segambut, but she is busy in faraway Sarawak.

Legit: Sometimes it is good to shock the civil servants with such 'precious' gifts for them to sit up and perform. Look at the state of the civil service now.

Nor Hisham, please tell us what you are going to do to clean up the lousy image of DBKL and how you are going to make Kuala Lumpur a clean, crime-free, corruption-free, beautiful, world-class city.

Kneazle: Pekan Hulu Selangor is clean, has well-kept lawns, no potholes and almost no litter. This is where the Hulu Selangor Council is located. Nor Hisham did wonders to transform this small town that now attracts local tourists.

Anonymous_c7d890c5: Without the broomstick wake-up call, I don't think they could have turned around within two years.

Annonnymous 080: "We collected 92 percent in just two years. That was recognised by the Selangor government". When you received the award, it was the reflection of how bad MDHS was then. Looks like the ‘broom award’ spurred your staff to work.

Umno's 'hand-kissing' culture infecting PKR, warns Azmin

Anonymous: Incumbent PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali should blame the “hand-kissing” culture on his party leader Anwar Ibrahim. When Anwar was pardoned by the Agong, he went around the country kissing the hands of constitutional rulers, setting an example to the minions in PKR.

Anon1: Maybe you should look closer to home, Azmin. We know some in Pakatan Harapan are enjoying this now that they are in power.

Andysee: I’m sure Azmin is taking a veiled dig at Anwar here. Is this not more proof that Azmin continues to secretly undermine Anwar and work with Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to secure the post for himself in the future? Remember the Selangor menteri besar succession issue? Is he doing the same thing?

Anonymous: With Azmin’s statement today, he will no doubt be accused of going against the PKR president-elect. But I totally agree with him. Even though I had no qualms Anwar becoming the eighth prime minister, I think Azmin, too, is prime minister material.

I could still remember when we wanted Mahathir to step down the last time, but now the majority want him to stay for more than two years if his health permits. Mahathir has definitely changed to become a much loved prime minister.

Anonymous_1527925538: People should note the inverted commas in 'hand kissing'. Azmin does not mean the literal action of hand kissing, but that of blindly idolising a leader and just accepting what he says or does.

Anonymous_1527925538: Blind loyalty towards a leader was what that brought Umno down. Loyalty must first and foremost be towards the country and the rakyat. PKR must remember this and not make the same mistake in idolising any one leader and just blindly accepting and following what he says.

Malaysian Malaysian: Exactly, the hand kissing has to stop. This is 2018, feudalistic behaviour has to go. The governed and the governing each have own roles to play, thus what was the way of doing things in a feudal society must change to how things are done in the present day.

Lodestar: Good leaders should be used as role models, not worshipped as idols.
