MCA Youth has urged the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to hasten the process of enacting anti-sexual harassment laws following the arrest of a deputy minister's aide for allegedly recording an upskirt video of a woman yesterday.

MCA Youth vice-chairperson Nicole Wong said perpetrators of sexual harassment often go unpunished in the current environment, as there are seldom "specific evidence" or eyewitnesses to such incidents

"Coupled with the lack of enforcement or appropriate provisions in the legislation, perpetrators will continue to remain unpunished, while victims have to bear the psychological scars and societal pressure if they choose to come forward with their accusations.

"This situation thus leads to another round of victimisation. Thus, there is a need for clear-cut legislation and professional enforcement methods to handle sexual harassment," Wong said in a statement today.

On Sunday, news broke that Deputy Home Minister Mohd Azis Jamman's aide had allegedly recorded an upskirt video of an optometrist.

The man, who had accompanied Azis to an optometry shop in Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur, was caught on CCTV holding up his mobile phone underneath the woman who was conducting an eye check on Azis.

Azis sacked the officer after news broke, and police detained him on Monday.

Wong said MCA Youth is willing to provide legal assistance to sexual harassment victims.

A law to punish sexual harassment has been in the pipeline for some time, with former women, family and community development minister Rohani Abdul Karim saying six months ago that she was looking into it.
