Backlash over caning of women just temporary - T’gganu MB
ADS

The Terengganu government remains positive as it faces backlash over the whipping of two women who pleaded guilty to attempting lesbian sex.

Menteri Besar Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said he believed that the backlash was just temporary and that the public would eventually understand that the punishment was meant to be a lesson and deterrent to those involved in LGBT activities.

“It’s a strong message to all Malaysians to remember that unnatural sex must not be practised in Terengganu in particular, and Malaysia in general, as this is a Muslim majority country.

“The backlash is just temporary...I believe that if the public can see the punishment objectively, and not emotionally, they will be able to accept it,” he told reporters after feting the TFC III President Cup and TFC IV Youth Cup teams in Kuala Terengganu last night.

The two women who pleaded guilty to attempting to have same-sex relations in a car were caned six times at the Terengganu Syariah High Court on Monday.

The sentence, which was the first for such an offence in the country, was conducted in a courtroom and witnessed by more than 100 people, including family members, lawyers and members of the media.
