Zahid blames Dr M for BN's GE14 defeat
BrightSpark: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamid, you lost because you were all seen to be kleptocrats – Umno was either guilty of the actual theft, or of supporting the thieves, or of associating with them.
You lost because Umno had driven the country to utter despair - and for the love of the country, the people decided to vote you lot out, despite all the gerrymandering that you had engaged.
If I were in a generous mood, I would say that you are just trying to shift blame. But I have long since lost any modicum of generosity for you klepto-Umnocrats.
David Dass: Interesting statement by Zahid - that BN lost 14th general election (GE14) because of Dr Mahathir Mohamad's legacy of debt and other problems. That 15 years of post-Mahathir's BN government was not sufficient time to sort out the problems inherited from Mahathir's government.
The critics of Mahathir say that the years of oppressive rule and abuse of power and the years of endemic leakages and corruption and the years of racism and religious extremism during the previous administration were the direct results of Mahathir's time as prime minister and of his policies and programmes.
They say that he weakened democratic institutions, ignored the separation of powers and the rule of law and emasculated the judiciary. They say that things worsened after Mahathir.
Mahathir may have been accused of undertaking expensive and sometimes wasteful expenditure but few would accuse him of taking money for himself. And all accept that his motivation was to strengthen the economy and advance the nation.
Mahathir has acknowledged his mistakes. And is now determined to set things right. He is undertaking institutional reforms and placing the right people in the important places.
Zahid does not explain how getting into worse debt by undertaking unnecessary projects at inflated prices was helpful to the economy. And he does not explain abuse of power and bad legislation.
Clever Voter: If we all agree to Zahid's opinion, then Mahathir must have left behind an impeccable and lasting legacy that successive leaders had a problem in its removal.
They had a good 15 years to do something but chose to make it even easier for their mischief. Zahid should thank and be grateful to Dr M if this is the case, he and his friends were presumably the biggest beneficiaries.
On hindsight, it's easier to blame but not admitting to their rotten behaviour is unacceptable. Refusal to recognise that there other Malaysians living in the community is another, this includes the poorer half of the Malay community which Umno claimed to represent for their struggle.
Most important of all, it is all about leadership. While former party president Najib Abdul Razak has been generous to all, did it occur to one and all where the money came from?
Obviously no, since it's spend now, and worry later. Rather than blame the past, Zahid shall be prepared to face the consequences for not fixing the so-called legacies left behind.
Khalid Gibran: I like your analysis, Zahid. Yes, he ruled for 22 out of the 61 years. That makes it one-third of Umno’s existence.
Yes, we know what happened, except for some Malaysiakini readers, about the mess he created and the looting that took place in the name of Malay rights.
I am not going to be blind to that, but history will speak the truth and history will judge him.

You borrow money from a bank, you return the money to the bank. You borrow money from a friend, you return the money to your friend.
This is straightforward. This is logical. No ifs and buts.

But we Malaysians not only need to get our money back, we also need to see the perpetrators face justice.
