Niosh offering health and safety cert for TVET students

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) is offering a programme on safety and health officers for higher education institutions (SHO for IPT) starting this year.

Niosh chairperson Lee Lam Thye said the program is specifically offered to students pursuing technical and vocational education and training (TVET) so that they can obtain a certificate of professional competence while in higher education institutions.

He said the ‘SHO for IPT’ program would be fully managed by Niosh so as to minimise costs and ensure the quality of the training courses.

“Niosh will also organise exam preparation workshops and four full examination papers for the programme.

“This new initiative would increase the number of workers with skills in occupational safety and health,” he told the media after officiating World Day for Safety and Health at Work celebration at the state-level here today.

Lee said besides cost-saving, the program would also benefit the employers as they would have young employees with occupational safety and health knowledge and certificate.

He said the programme was part of institute's efforts to empower future employees as well as to help the government to reduce workplace accidents.

“Any higher education institutions interested in implementing this programme may contact Niosh for further information,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Lee also suggested that the Education Ministry carries out a safety audit for aged school buildings of 15 to 20 years in rural areas, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.

He said implementing the security audit would enable the ministry to determine if the structure of the building, as well as the school premises, were still safe.
