Najib charged over SRC funds

Najib Abdul Razak was charged with three counts of criminal breach of trust and one charge of abuse of power in relation to the RM42 million in his personal bank account, believed to have originated from former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International.

The former prime minister paid half the RM1 million bail set today and surrendered his two passports after claiming trial to all four charges.

Maintaining his innocence, Najib said the trial, set for February next year, is a chance for him to clear his name.

Attorney-general Tommy Thomas assured the public that Najib will be given a fair trial.

Earlier, Thomas was heckled by a group of Najib's supporters who asked him to speak in Bahasa Malaysia after he addressed the media in English.

Riza Aziz grilled by MACC

Najib's stepson Riza Aziz was grilled for a second consecutive day by the MACC over allegations that 1MDB funds were channelled into his film production company.

Riza’s associate, businessperson Low Taek Jho – a central figure in the 1MDB scandal – had his Malaysian passport invalidated by the Immigration Department.

Current and former government officials told Reuters how the previous Najib administration had systematically obstructed probes into 1MDB and muzzled critics.

Najib's wife Rosmah Mansor told her supporters to not cry for her and her husband’s current predicament.

Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, the lawyer representing Najib, rapped the 1MDB taskforce for its statement announcing that the former prime minister would be charged today.
