KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Jubilation at PM’s Raya do

Some 80,000 people attended the federal cabinet’s Hari Raya open house event at Seri Perdana, Putrajaya, with many braving long lines and the heat for a chance to shake the hand of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

In his speech at the end of the event, Mahathir joked that he shook “55,000” hands and he had to call it a day or his hand would fall off.

His deputy Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said some of Pakatan Harapan’s election promises for the first 100 days would have to be delayed due to financial constraints.

Najib’s supporters wants to see proof

Over at Pekan, Pahang some 500 people attended Najib Abdul Razak’s open house event, with many telling Malaysiakini that the former prime minister was innocent until proven guilty.

Najib told reporters that he was adjusting to the “new reality” in Malaysia now that he is celebrating Aidilfitri outside of Putrajaya for the first time since 2009.

He also urged Malaysians to forget the GE14 political rivalries and move forward with the new government.

A report claimed that Malaysian authorities are considering money laundering and misappropriation charges against Najib.

Another report claimed that Mahathir had rejected Jho Low’s offer for cooperation on the 1MDB investigation in return for immunity.

Other Kinibites

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s bid for Umno presidency appeared increasingly difficult as more people throw their support for Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

Former Kempas assemblyperson Tengku Putra Haron Aminurrashid Hamid Jumat claimed that the monarchs who abused their positions in the past are receiving their comeuppance now.

The Kedah government has already identified their choices for state assembly speaker and deputy speaker. They do not foresee any problems in having them appointed despite both government and opposition have 18 seats each.

Looking ahead

Razaleigh is expected to announce his candidacy for Umno presidency at 1pm in Kuala Lumpur today.
