Dr M mulls new national car

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad told a conference in Japan that Malaysia was mulling a new national car project.

BN leaders criticised the proposal, claiming that the previous national car Proton had wasted billions and bred cronyism.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak also questioned Mahathir's rationale of cancelling public transportation projects based on concerns about ballooning national debt yet wanting to venture into another national car project.

Mahathir said Malaysia will be friendly to China as it is a major global player but wants to reduce reliance on the country in terms of borrowings.

Police cart away luxury goods in new 1MDB raid

Police raided a house in Precinct 10, Putrajaya, believed to be the residence of Najib's former principal private secretary Shukry Mohd Salleh, in relation to the 1MDB investigation.

The police found two boxes of luxury items, believed to have been purchased using funds allegedly misappropriated from 1MDB.

The MACC is seeking Tan Kim Loong, a man whose identity was reportedly used as an alias for businessperson Low Taek Jho, to facilitate in the 1MDB investigation.

Council of Eminent Persons member Daim Zainuddin said the government had detected many "mini 1MDB" scandals plaguing the country.

A China firm denied a letter circulating that it had offered the Pahang royalty RM1.3 billion in commission if it could lobby the government to grant it the MRT3 project.

Dr M will stay on as long as wanted

Mahathir said he will stay on as prime minister for as long as the people wanted him to.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is set to succeed Mahathir, refused to put a time frame for the prime minister to hand over power.

Najib said he will bear the sins if Yayasan 1MDB's haj sponsorship programme was indeed funded using stolen money.

He also claimed that the government's cautious approach to building the 1MDB corruption case against him suggested there was no solid evidence.

Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus, a key figure in Bank Negara's investigation into 1MDB, is tipped as a likely candidate to be the new governor of the central bank.

A major reshuffle in the police leadership is reportedly underway, including the replacement of inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong announced he will take a 10 percent salary cut to help with the country's debt.
