Yoursay: Umno duplicitous in its defence of royalty

YOURSAY | ‘Can't Umno learn a new trick, instead of defaulting to race, religion and royalty?’

Umno urges gov't to break silence on attempts to belittle Malay rulers

Anonymous 2251681440225523: Which Umno is this that is saying a “culture is deliberately being sown with the intention of eroding the people's loyalty towards the Malay rulers”?

You mean the party that bypassed the rulers to steamroll the National Security Council Act 2016? You mean the party that asked the Perlis raja “Apa itu murka?” (What does angering royalty mean?)

STTK: Yes, the most recent example of belittling and insulting the institution of Malay rulers just happened recently in Perlis - by Umno MPs. Led by an Umno leader, who may even contest to become the party’s vice-president.

On the other hand, I applaud this. Instead of the way forward proposed by certain quarters within Umno of reforming the party, they continue to say brainless things. This will render them even more irrelevant.

Every utterance of theirs makes it that much more difficult for them to make a comeback.

Anonymous 1802761448130592: Can't Umno for once learn a new trick, and not harp on the rhetoric of race, religion and royalty over and over again to bait and try to drag everyone through the mud.

It's precisely because of this repugnant stance that Malaysians rejected Umno in the 14th general election. If it didn’t work, try, try again?

Reform your ways of doing things, put the interests of the rakyat foremost in your agenda, and Umno can rise again.

By continuing with your oft-quoted rhetoric of the special rights of Malays, Islam and the position of the rulers being threatened, Umno is just driving itself into oblivion.

Malaysian-United: Enough, Umno. Enough of being a troublemaker.

Now you are trying to create the perception that the Pakatan Harapan government is going against the rulers. You have been trying to pit the different ethnic groups against one another for how long, now you are pitting the rulers against the Harapan government.

If you want to be an effective opposition, please learn to do something constructive and beneficial to society and the nation.

Trying to play the role of ‘saviour’ to the monarchy won't get you very far. I believe even the rulers can see through your selfish motives. Don't use the royal institution to protect your political interests.

Anonymous_4b0f0375: Umno should first look at its ‘own culture’ of doing the same old song and dance for political mileage. They should take a look at where this culture has brought them and where Umno stands in the eyes of the rakyat.

Look at the results of GE14. You were defeated. Had PAS not played the role of spoiler, your obliteration would be almost total.

If they are unwilling to accept the fact that society wants to move on and become more pluralistic – except for a few holdouts who want to get back on the gravy train – then its future is doomed.

Learn a new song, why don’t you.

Anonymous_1371479577: The greatest disrespect to king and country is to steal billions from the Malaysian people and leaving many of them destitute.

Unfortunately, Umno has not earned the right to be the defender of Rukun Negara. The Federal Constitution is what needs to be respected and upheld, within which the framers enshrined special rights for the royal institution, Malays and Islam. If we respect the constitution, then all is well.

Stoking racist and religious fears is no longer a path forward for Malaysians. The rakyat clearly wants the restore the rule of law and the proper checks and balances spelled out in the constitution.

Contrary to this attempt at fearmongering, almost everyone I know holds the Agong in the highest esteem, and trust that he will act wisely for the betterment of Malaysians, regardless of race or religion.

Anonymous #07988903: It seems like Umno doesn’t even know why it lost the election. Umno has nothing to offer except to fan hatred between the Malays and non-Malays and using religion and the royal institution as their political capital.

This horse has decomposed to fertiliser, and is still being flogged.

'Does Kadir Jasin want to abolish the royal institution?'

Gerard Lourdesamy: Did veteran journalist A Kadir Jasin say he wants to abolish the monarchy? No, he didn’t. Just more lies from Umno.

The monarchy is a public institution that must be subjected to public scrutiny because it is funded by the taxpayers through the civil list and privy purse that is charged to the consolidated funds. However, there must be decorum and dignity in such scrutiny.

The monarchy must also abide by the constitution and the established conventions in the exercise of its public functions and duties. In discharging its duties, the crown must be seen to be fair and impartial while remaining dignified.

Ruben: Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Razlan Rafii should choose his words carefully.

Don’t use the old Umno tactic of turning things into sedition, purposely misinterpreting Kadir’s article as though he wants to abolish the monarchy. That statement of his is seditious in itself.

Rippoh2016: This is yet another attempt at scaremongering by an Umno leader. To be clear, Kadir never even went near the question of whether the royal institution should be abolished.

If I understand him correctly, he merely emphasised that the royal institution had its role to play within the context of the Malaysian constitution, nothing more. This just shows how clearly Umno has run out of ideas to win back the support of Malaysians.

Roastmah: While Kadir may be trying to be pragmatic, he should be careful not to let Umno have a reason to appear noble. It is best to avoid the topic for now.

Bogus Warrior: In the United States, the Republicans fool those in the red states by trotting out the three Gs: ‘God, guns and gays’. Here, we have Umno using the three Rs: ‘race, religion and royalty’.

The last US election proved to be the worst in the country’s history, where they elected a snake oil salesman to office.

Unfortunately for Umno, things are different here - we had the best in our history and threw the conman out.
