YOURSAY | ‘The best part of the Malaysiakini headline for me is: Apandi sacked.’

Agong consents to Thomas as AG, Apandi sacked

Vijay47: What news to read first thing in the morning, what a relief!

The whole nation can be glad that an issue that seemed to be bringing various institutions to a confrontation has been resolved.

For this, our gratitude must be for PM Dr Mahathir Mohamad for his unwavering stand on doing the right thing by the constitution and to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim for working behind the scenes to achieve the results the country so badly needed.

Now is the time to move on, to take Malaysia to new heights as a united country. To you, Tommy Thomas, 30 million congratulations from the rakyat looking towards you to undo the failings of the past and set fresh paths to follow.

I do not envy you, the tough part begins only now, heavy the head that wears the attorney-general's (AG) crown. But in Tommy Thomas we have the right man.

Clever Voter: After all the hue and cry, the appointment of Thomas as the country's new AG is now confirmed.

The events leading to this are almost unbelievable. But dramatic twists and turns are not unexpected, given that the country is in transition.

Unnecessary speculations were aplenty in social media; it almost became a case of people versus establishment.

The appointment is significant nonetheless, and with the expected increase in public prosecutions, we can expect more unfolding of drama.

It is hoped that Thomas is allowed the time to get on with his new role.

David Dass: This whole election thing. This coming together of former foes to mount a challenge against an increasingly oppressive and corrupt government. Their reconciliation.

PAS and DAP coming together in 2008 and 2013. And then Mahathir leading the Pakatan Harapan coalition in GE14. And then the change. Every day there are new issues. Ground-breaking decisions and appointments. Sometimes gut-wrenching issues.

The appointment of Tommy Thomas being the latest. Mahathir at 92 making the big decisions and holding his ground. In the end, wisdom prevailed. It is as if the ground moved. And a new nation was born.

Sirach: The best part of the Malaysiakini headline for me is: “Apandi sacked”. I’m glad he didn’t resign. The indignity of being sacked was what he deserved. How he ever sat as a Federal Court judge, I’ll never comprehend.

Panorama123: In chess, Mohamed Apandi Ali should have resigned immediately after May 9, instead of waiting for his services to be terminated/checkmated.

Grandmaster Dr M and the new AG can now proceed to initiate all the necessary legal proceedings (and there are too many to list down here).

AB Sulaiman: Confucius says, "Man has three ways of acting wisely. First, on meditation; that is the noblest. Secondly, on imitation; that is the easiest. Thirdly, on experience; that is the bitterest."

Let's make the 'bitter' Apandi Ali’s AG experience a lesson for us all. Appointing Thomas is a good start.

I'm Watching You!: Dr M and Anwar stuck to their appointed AG, with the backing of the people.

Take note, with the backing of the people - nobody is going to dictate to us how we frame the future of Malaysia. It is now in our hands.

Congrats Tommy Thomas, be fair and take good care of this country.

Anonymous_1528154110: Comptroller of the Royal Household Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the appointment of Thomas as the new AG “would continue to preserve the special rights and privileges of the Malays and bumiputeras, as well as the status of Islam as the federal religion”.

With respect, I find this statement totally irrelevant and superfluous. Why would the appointment of a non-Malay/Muslim presuppose that this would not continue to be so in the first place?

Why draw the unnecessary and baseless conclusion that just because the new AG is not a Malay/Muslim, that he would cast aside and not protect the special rights of bumiputeras which are enshrined in the constitution?

Perhaps this fear arises because for six decades under BN rule, it was the norm and custom that while the rights and special privileges of the Malays were protected, it also meted out unfair treatment of the other races.

So, therefore, the appointment of a non-Malay will now reverse the position where the bumiputera rights would be eroded while favouring other non-Malay races?

Please do not impute that the non-Malay AG would have the same DNA as the ex-BN government that practised blatant discrimination against the non-Malays.

Wake up to a new Malaysia and begin to feel that sharing equally the fruits of the country with everyone, irrespective of race, religion, colour or creed, is the correct and decent thing to do.

The new AG will not practice the “do unto others as others have done unto you”.

Vote Bn Out!!! No2: Thank you, Tuanku, for upholding the Federal Constitution. It is time for Thomas to proceed with the prosecution of the corrupt leaders, be they Chinese, Malays or Indians.

The corrupt must not be protected. They have no place in Malaysia.

Abd.Karim: And thank you, Tun M. Your strong character to do the right thing instead of the popular thing is a lesson to all.

At 92, Tun M is still in the process of teaching Malaysians how to lead the country honourably. For a long time, Malaysia seemed to have gone off tangent but you are setting it right now.

Do not fear, Tun M, the silent majority is always behind people who have integrity and do Malaysia proud.

They will not support opportunists, racists and religious extremists. That's not our Malaysian culture.

AJ: Tun M is making the tough choices of reversing the bad ones he made during his previous tenure as PM. He is forcibly belling all those in power, including himself.

He is righting the wrongs before his time is up - cleaning the slate by voiding what he wrote in his book by which he had previously ruled. This is indeed not the case of the same stuff in a new form.

Anonymous_154292867213: Not everyone will find this change so easy to deal with after such a long period.

Whilst celebration is to be expected, please do bear in mind that empathy and humility now towards those fellow Malaysians will bring their respect to us in the longer term. Not all, but many.

Anonymous_154292867213: Malaysia's greatest asset? Our human race.
