Yoursay: Little sign or hope of redemption on BN's horizon

YOURSAY | 'Umno won't repent because what has happened is very much part of their DNA.'

A day after Dr M endorses KJ, Daim burns Umno Youth wing and leader

Abasir: Well said, Council of Eminent Persons chairperson Daim Zainuddin. Umno leaders will not repent because what has happened during their rule is very much part of their DNA.

They were never shocked or scandalised by the humongous sums involved in the 1MDB scandal because if given a chance, they would have done the same, or worse.

And the Malays who still support them are those who do not know anything else other than to queue up for projects.

Jaded: I agree with Daim on this matter. The fact remains they supported their chief at the time, Najib Razak, which makes them equally guilty.

Najib's loss in the elections does not absolve them of guilt and allow them to plead ignorance, especially when they had access to all the reports and documents.

The current leaders need to make a stand - did they know or not, and if they did, what was their stand towards Najib? There are no two ways about it.

WilliamWallace: Indeed, the whole Umno party were privy and complicit in acts of corruption, therefore their integrity is questionable.

Unless you worship corruption and racism, Umno as a party is pretty much finished. You’ll need a brand-new breed in the party to have any hope. Umno as it is now cannot be trusted.

FearGodsJudgment: There has got to be one to run the show, and Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin is the best candidate.

During GE14 season, he acted in many election dramas and many wondered about his talents in acting. He has the experience needed to go for presidency. He is the best choice.

Anonymous_1527925538: But unlike the sacked former deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, Khairy just kept quiet and is thus complicit in covering up the 1MDB scandal.

Anonymous 2411361459930771: Umno and BN are a brood of vipers. When the mother hen was pecking at the worm, chicks like Khairy, acting chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein and Wanita chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil got bits and pieces of it.

Now with the mother hen gone, they are pecking at each other, asking who will find the worm to feed the chicks.

Machiave11i: I agree with Daim and have said the same – a massive overhaul in Umno is needed across the board, and any of the existing members on the supreme council should not be re-elected, let alone be allowed to lead.

Khairy, Perlis BN chief Shahidan Kassim, Zahid and all should just give up.

Anonymous: Umno Youth are delusional - most of them till now still do not know why BN or Umno lost in GE14.

Seriously, there is no cure for this batch of Umno youths. They are still hallucinating that the Pakatan Harapan government will fall within three months, and still refuse to admit their mistakes.

Najib has really succeeded in turning Umno Youth into zombies that worship money, power, and all that is unsavoury. Umno is beyond redemption.

BTN: The sad truth when you look at the people that Umno has in comparison to Harapan is that it’s like heaven and hell. There is no individual in Umno worth supporting at all.

It is a sad but true situation. If Umno has young leaders like Harapan's Azmin Ali, Rafizi Ramli and many others, they would have a chance.

Ultimately: If anyone has any illusions about Umno remaking itself, just days ago one of their presidential hopefuls said he wants to bring the party's focus back to "race, religion and country".

Why would the country, after finally purging the nation of the BN scourge with extreme difficulty, want to let them come back and do it all over again?

An open letter to MCA

Gordon: I agree with Malaysiakini columnist S Thayaparan that MCA needs to revamp itself to morph into a credible opposition.

Umno and PAS will form a new coalition to harp on ‘ketuanan Melayu’, and even the need for imposition of even more syariah laws to protect their entrenched interests, and that is one opposition pact that I would abhor.

It is best for MCA to strike out from Umno shadows once and for all.

Anonymous#007: This is actually an opportunity for MCA to lead the opposition. The party needs to go back to its roots, but with some changes to accommodate increasing calls for a single Bangsa Malaysia.

The first thing to do is to revive and/or expand the social service department that used to be headed by Michael Chong. That initiative had helped countless Malays and Indians as well.

I am sure Harapan will give a generous allocation for such services that are offered without favouring any race or religion.

Headhunter: Preposterous as it may sound, but what if MCA and MIC were to merge into one single party in addition to some other minor parties? They would form a formidable opposition.

But first, senior members from both parties should give way to younger leaders by not offering themselves for re-election.

No matter how well Dr Mahathir Mohamad's government can manage, Malaysians now realise that a strong opposition is absolutely necessary for a better democracy.

Anonymous_ad31fa84: Unfortunately, from looking at what's on the social media, the MCA mouthpieces are still stooping to personal attacks and not coming up with any substantial objections.

I seriously hope they will get their act together, grow some backbone and move forward and be a strong opposition party for now, and hopefully will gain control again.

All parties must remember that we Malaysians, okay, at least I as one Malaysian, would like to see a strong two-party system in Malaysian politics.
