Harapan government finally installed

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, in his maiden speech to the staff of the Prime Minister's Department, vowed to restore the country to its former glory.

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was finally sworn in as deputy prime minister, while DAP's Gobind Singh Deo became the first Sikh minister.

The government's committee for institutional reforms invited members of the public to make public representations on improving the country's institutions.

Newly-minted Education Minister Maszlee Malik, who was a former lecturer, said he too was a victim of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971, and stressed his commitment to repeal this law.

Maszlee also addressed allegations that he supported controversial preacher Zakir Naik, stating that he supported freedom of speech but not the preacher's extremist views.

Nur Jazlan blames Najib for BN's defeat

Former deputy minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed, who lost his Pulai parliamentary seat, blamed former prime minster Najib Abdul Razak for BN's defeat in the 14th general election.

Police reportedly took 11 hours to count 11 bags of cash totalling tens of millions of ringgit that were seized from properties linked to Najib, with still 15 more bags to count.

The Prime Minister's Office announced the formation of a task force on 1MDB comprising members of a former task force on the same matter which previously investigated Najib but was dissolved after a crackdown by the then BN government.

The new task force will report to the 1MDB committee announced by the Council of Eminent Persons.

The Wall Street Journal reported that buinessperson Low Taek Jho, a central figure in the 1MDB scandal, was in Phuket, awaiting BN's victory announcement in the 14th general election, but he vanished after it turned out that Pakatan Harapan had won.

Newly-minted MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull reported for work, stating that it was tough for him to return to the agency that he had served for 32 years.

MACC deputy commissioner (operations) Azam Baki said Najib must report to the MACC tomorrow (Tuesday) to provide his statement or face action.

Guan Eng trial put off

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng's corruption trial was put off pending an attempt to make a fresh representation to the new attorney-general in July on the matter.

Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen said the government should review all politically motivated cases during the BN era.

MCA's Ti Lian Ker claimed Lim's attempt to have his corruption case dropped through a new representation to the future attorney-general was a case of political interference.

Lim's lawyer Ramkarpal Singh, who is also the Bukit Gelugor MP, said his boss' current case does not bar him from being sworn in as the finance minister.

The Selangor Palace gave its nod for Azmin Ali to take up the position as economic affairs minister and he will temporarily stay on as Selangor menteri besar, pending a replacement.

Selangor DAP urged PKR to consult its Harapan partners on the new menteri besar for Selangor.

Transparency International Malaysia urged the new prime minister and his ministers to declare their assets to MACC.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli said he was not keen on any government positions and will focus on helping Harapan capture Terengganu in the next general election.

Umno supreme council member Ahmad Maslan likened his party to a sunken ship but believes it can be raised from underwater.

Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown urged Mahathir to investigate Sarawak governor Abdul Taib Mahmud once he gets the house in order.

Permata patron Rosmah Mansor said she hoped the early childhood agency will be maintained, even though BN was no longer in power.

Looking ahead

Najib is is expected to provide his statement to the MACC at 10am in Putrajaya.

The former prime minister's supporters are expected to gather outside the MACC headquarters in solidarity.

Several ministers will clock-in at their office for the first time today.
