GE14 | Incumbent MP for Langkawi Nawawi Ahmad is not surprised that Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad wants to contest the seat in the 14th general election.

He said Kedah BN had expected Mahathir, who is also chairperson of Bersatu, to contest on the island.

He said he respected Mahathir, 92, as a former prime minister and experienced politician, and his right to contest in Langkawi.

However, he said it must be borne in mind that the sentiments of the voters will not become votes, and they will choose wisely.

“When we vote, we have to think, and realise that the vote will determine the government which will set the direction the country, people and religion will take in the future,” he said when contacted today.

In the 13th general election, Nawawi, 56, defeated PKR candidate Ahmad Abdullah with a majority of 11,861 votes.

Nawawi, who is the chairperson of the social media committee of the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club (BNBBC), was commenting on the announcement by PKR  president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail of  Mahathir’s decision to contest the Langkawi parliamentary seat.

The announcement, made in Langkawi yesterday, sees Mahathir returning to the political arena after staying away in the last three general elections.
