Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also the home minister, should be held responsible for the bleak future of an STPM top scorer, said PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

This is over the Home Ministry and National Registration Department (NRD) refusing to recognise Roisah Abdullah as a citizen despite being adopted by Malaysian parents.

"Roisah is a brilliant student and a top scorer in this year’s STPM examination. She is also the top student this year in SMK Sg Kapar Indah, Klang.

The actions of the NRD and Home Ministry had rendered Roisah stateless and without a future.

Despite her brilliant results, Roisah cannot apply to local universities because of her statelessness.

"Zahid must accept responsibility for this situation," Anwar, who is presently in prison, said in a statement released through his party.

He said Zahid must immediately resolve the issue so as to enable Roisah to enter a local university and carry on her brilliant academic achievement.

"I also urge Zahid to look into the large number of other Malaysians who remain stateless despite being qualified under the Federal Constitution," said Anwar.

Roisah's plight was today highlighted by Padang Serai MP N Surendran, who is also Anwar's lawyer.

Roisah scored 3As and 1B in her STPM examination last week but will unlikely get a place in local universities due to her stateless status.
