Malaysiakini will be holding a special screening of Hollywood blockbuster ‘The Post’ to thank all contributors to the Malaysiakini Legal Defence Fund which has topped RM400,000 since its launch on Jan 11.

The movie will be screened at the TGV 1 Utama theatre (at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya) at 9pm on March 1 -  a week before the premiere of the movie in Malaysia.

We are happy to announce that all donors, and our long-time subscribers, can get up to two tickets each for this free screening of the film, made possible through a marketing collaboration with movie distributor United International Pictures Malaysia.

‘The Post’ is a political thriller revolving around the attempts of The Washington Post to publish damaging allegations – called the Pentagon Papers - against then US President Richard Nixon at the height of the Vietnam War.

This was a year before the Watergate scandal, also exposed by the Post, which finally buried the Nixon presidency.

The movie stars Meryl Streep as Post publisher Katherine Graham - the first female CEO of a Fortune 500 company - who has to work together with legendary executive editor Ben Bradlee, played by Tom Hanks, as the newspaper prepares for a public listing which could make or break the company.

The movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, has been nominated for Best Picture while Streep has been nominated for Best Actress for this year’s Academy Awards which will be announced on March 4.

“There is no better way to thank our supporters and contributors than for us to join them in watching this movie, which poignantly reminds us of Malaysiakini's mission,” Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan said.

“This is also a rare opportunity for us in Malaysiakini to meet our loyal supporters in person.”

The business of publishing

‘The Post’ also puts the spotlight on the business side of publishing.

“It's always very difficult balancing business interests with the need to maintain good journalism. Far too often, the business side wins over the newsroom’s role to stand up to power,” Malaysiakini CEO Premesh Chandran said.

“But at Malaysiakini, we are able to balance both. With the help of our subscribers and supporters, we have kept the venture going for 18 years without compromising our founding principles, and we intend to continue to do so for a very long time to come.”

Malaysiakini has 150 tickets available for our Legal Defence Fund donors as well as long-time subscribers (those who have subscribed to Malaysiakini for more than three years).

To reserve your tickets, please email [email protected] with the subject title ‘The Post’, along with your name and contact number. Also, please specify whether you want one or two tickets. Malaysiakini will email you back to confirm your seats.

These free tickets are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Do join the Malaysiakini team at this special screening on March 1. Shoot us an email!
