57 schools closed in Sarawak due to floods

Fifty-seven flood-hit schools in Sarawak remain closed as of 8 am today.

A State Disaster Management Committee secretariat spokesperson said 6,274 pupils, 826 teachers and 350 non-teaching staff were affected by the closure.

He said the floods also temporarily displaced 4,444 residents, who are currently sheltered at 24 evacuation centres. Of the number, 106 are in Samarahan, 1,201 in Serian, eight in Sarikei, 1,175 in Sibu, 100 in Mukah, 1,532 in Bintulu, and 322 in Limbang.

Based on a report by the Sarawak Health Department, eight clinics were also inundated, forcing temporary closure, the spokesperson said.

The clinics are at Ulu Teru and Long Loyang in Miri; Nanga Taroh, Mukah; Sungai Arip, Sibu; Tamin, Selangau, Nanga Tau and Sangan in Bintulu; and Batu Danau, Limbang.
