Ex-Air Force captain jailed for funding IS member Wanndy Mohd Jedi

A retired Royal Malaysian Air Force captain was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the High Court here today for providing financial service through his bank account to a Daesh-linked individual.

Justice Mohd Sofian Abd Razak meted out the sentence to Azuddin Mahmud, 54, after he pleaded guilty to letting his Maybank account be used by Mohamed Danny Mohamed Jedi and his brother Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, 27, a Daesh member, in credit and debit transactions involving RM3,500.

The ex-RMAF officer committed the offence at the Maybank branch at City Point Dayabumi Complex in Jalan Sultan Hishamuddin here, between Jan 27, 2016 and Jan 29, 2016.

The court ordered Azuddin’s sentence to run from his arrest on June 25, 2017.

In his judgement, Mohd Sofian said the action of the former officer was utterly regrettable considering his service of more than 20 years.

“The accused, having been an RMAF officer should know that he was committing an offence. For whatever reason, the interest of the public is more important than personal interest,” said the judge.

The charge under Section 130(1)(b), punishable under Section 130(1)(bb) of the Penal Code carries a jail term of not less than seven years and not exceeding 30 years and liable to a fine on conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Azuddin was arrested after police found three suspicious transactions in his Maybank account between Jan 27, 2016 and Jan 29, 2016.

Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam urged the court to impose a heavy sentence in view of the seriousness of the offence.

However, the accused’s counsel, lieutenant commander (R) Norhasham Hasan in mitigation submitted that the accused was the sole breadwinner for his family of six children and a wife.

“My client is a first offender. He is remorseful for his actions and has promised not to repeat the offence. He also has some health issues such as difficulty in breathing and kidney problem and been rushed to the emergency ward a number of times,” said counsel.
