A police report has been lodged against several Facebook users after fake photographs depicting Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong molesting a woman resurfaced.

Selangor Gerakan Youth vice-chairperson Ivanpal Singh Grewal filed the report with the Dang Wangi district police headquarters yesterday.

“The photos, which first surfaced in 2014 and were later debunked, have resurfaced, perhaps because of the coming general election.

“It has been posted on three occasions by three Facebook users – once in August last year and twice this year,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

Urging the police to act against the culprits, Ivanpal described the fake images as criminal defamation against Mah.

Both BN and the opposition have accused each other of spreading fake news and accusations against each other on social media.

On Jan 3, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak launched BN's web portal - therakyat.com - in view of the 14th general election.

In his speech, Najib said social media has become the primary source of information for the people and as such more needed to be done to counter "fake news" circulated online.

"We have realised that fake news have become a weapon for the opposition to attack us, particularly during the previous general election.

"We need a platform to connect with the people while providing them with accurate and fast news.

"This portal will provide the truth to the people," Najib added.
