Chinese tourist charged with violating 'no smoking' regulation on plane

A tourist from China was charged in the Tawau Magistrate’s Court today with violating the ‘no smoking’ civil aviation regulation while aboard an AirAsia flight to Tawau from Kuala Lumpur.

No plea was recorded from Li Jin Ming, 41, of Yunnan, China, who is accused of smoking inside lavatory D, on flight AK5746  at 1.01 pm on Jan 16.

Lower Court registrar Puspawati Sangut set RM5,000 as bail with two local sureties, and Jan 25 for remention.

The court also ordered the accused to surrender his passport to the court and to report to the investigating officer once a week, pending disposal of the case.

ASP Nur Intan Jamrin was the prosecuting officer while counsel Liew Hon Min represented the accused.

Li was charged under Section 100 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, which carries a fine of not more than RM25,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year, or both, on conviction.
