Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad has urged the government to make a meaningful stand against US President Donald Trump.

According to him, this included Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak retracting his pledge to Trump during an official trip to the US in September.

“Your enemy - those who blaspheme against the religion of a majority of Malaysians by claiming their terrorism is Islamic - is our enemy, too,” Najib had penned in an article published in US political website The Hill on the anniversary of the Sept 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Mahathir's call comes ahead of Najib and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang joining a rally outside the Putrajaya mosque this afternoon to condemn Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“Opposition parties can only demonstrate. But governments can act meaningfully.

“Umno's demonstration together with PAS can only be meaningful if it results in the BN government acting against Trump and the US,” he added in a blog posting.

Mahathir said the government should emulate Turkey in setting up a Malaysian consulate accredited to the government of Palestine in Jerusalem.

“We call upon the Malaysian government to vote in favour of a draft resolution condemning the US decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

“We, the opposition, call on Najib to rescind his words to Trump during his visit to see the president of the US that the enemies of the United States are also the enemies of Malaysia,” he added.

Mahathir said the US regards Palestine as an enemy and therefore Malaysia must assure the world that Palestine is not its enemy as well.

He added Malaysia must also show that it is in favour of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine.
