MACC is expected to make about 100 arrests in corruption cases in Johor by the end of this year.

Johor MACC director Azmi Alias said this belief was based on the state government leadership’s support and assistance to the agency in its all-our war against corruption.

However, he still hoped that the government and public especially, would make corruption the country’s number one enemy, as it still occurred anywhere, whenever there was an opportunity or space to commit corruption.

“Until the end of this year, I expect about 100 arrests to be made in Johor but will this show that corruption has been stamped out in Johor?

“I think no, because for every 100 arrested, they’ll be ‘replaced’ with 100 others who will commit the same wrongdoings as corruption is much related to opportunities and space.

“The moment one sits at a place, the chances of involving in corruption are high,” he said in his speech to about 2,700 civil servants at a dialogue session on the National Transformation 2050 plan which was officiated by chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa at Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios, Johor Bahru, today.

Azmi said the country would not develop as desired when there were still many locals in the prisons and illegal immigrants in the detention depots.

He said the situation indicated increase in the number of court cases that might be linked to corruption.

“Hence, looking at this matter, my aspiration is that we must make corruption the number one enemy in this country.

“Previously, the government had placed (narcotic) drugs as the country’s number one enemy,” he said.
