KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

MACC moves in on Warisan veep

MACC arrested Parti Warisan Sabah vice-president Peter Anthony after he gave his statement at the state MACC office in Kota Kinabalu.

Earlier, the MACC seized around RM150 million in cash from multiple raids across Sabah in relation to a syndicate siphoning money from government infrastructure projects.

Khairuddin Abu Hassan attempted to disqualify Ng Aik Guan, the lawyer of Penang businessperson Low Taek Jho, from representing his client in the former Umno leader’s suit to recover assets allegedly acquired using misappropriated 1MDB funds.

PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's lawyer Gopal Sri Ram argued at the Kuala Lumpur High Court that the government failed to explain the prime minister's payment of RM9.5 million to a prosecutor involved in Anwar's Sodomy II case.

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad again came to the defence of DAP, conceding that he had to undo his past demonisation of DAP.

He also scoffed at Umno's boast of being instrumental in winning independence for the country, pointing out today's Umno would end up pawning the country.

Jamal stages beer stunt

Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Md Yunos smashed several beer bottles outside the Selangor secretariat building in protest against organising liquor-based functions in the state.

Shah Alam police chief Shafien Mamat said cops will investigate Jamal and his supporters for unlawful assembly following the stunt.

MCA religious harmony bureau chief Ti Lian Ker warned Jamal's stunt will backfire on BN.

Parent-Teacher Association chairperson of SK Putrajaya Presint 14(1) Mohamad Sahar Mat Din defended the singing of the Umno song and waving of the party flag at the school's event, stating that it was only a matter of perception.

Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon said there is now a consensus on the incident at the school and his boss Mahdzir Khalid would respond in due time.

The 'H' man

Tengku Sarifuddin Tengku Ahmad, the prime minister's press secretary, denied the existence of an officer from the Prime Minister's Department referred to as "H" who allegedly tried to bribe Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman with RM5 million to quit as Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth chief.

However, Syed Saddiq insisted that "H" was indeed a known right-hand man of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Syed Saddiq, who had claimed he was blackmailed, also warned that he will retaliate if his family was attacked by his political opponents.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said he was shocked that chief secretary to the government Ali Hamsa did not see any problems in Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor urging teachers to join Umno at a primary school function.

PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli rebutted Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's claim that the opposition was out to downsize the civil service, stressing that the focus was on political appointees.

Other Kini bites

DAP member Zaidi Ahmad was met with cheers and jeers when he turned up at an Umno function in Permatang Pauh to question its information chief Annuar Musa about 1MDB.

Serdang MP Ong Kian Ming pointed out that public transportation ridership for the second quarter of this year had declined despite billions in investments.

The Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) will commence an inquiry into a series of missing person cases including that of pastor Raymond Koh who was kidnapped in broad daylight.

Urban Wellbeing, Housing, and Local Government Minister Noh Omar scoffed at Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali's offer of rent-free lodging to those who were evicted from a Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad (MAHB) land in Subang, claiming that the demolition could have been averted with a single phone call.

Selangor Umno will rope in former state menteri besar Muhammad Muhammad Taib for its series of roadshows ahead of the general election.

Looking ahead

Parti Sosialis Malaysia is set to announce that it will contest in the parliament seat of Hulu Langat and state seat of Semenyih in Kajang.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi will attend an Asean poverty eradication meeting in Kuala Lumpur.

Supporters will hold a solidarity gathering for jailed PKR vice-president Tian Chua at his service centre in Kuala Lumpur.
