Umno-themed school event under fire

Pupils of SK Putrajaya Presint 14(1) chanted "Hidup Umno" and waved Umno flags in an Umno-themed decoration and performance competition attended by Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor.

The Parent Action Group for Education (Page) decried the event, stating that such practices erode confidence in national schools.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said under the government of previous prime ministers, the minister responsible for such an event would have been sacked.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak warned civil servants that they face a bleak future if the opposition comes to power.

Bid to compel Jho Low's extradition fails

Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali failed in his bid to compel the police to extradite Penang businessperson Jho Low over his involvement in the 1MDB scandal.

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur fixed Nov 23 to decide on former minister Zaid Ibrahim's suit against the prime minister over alleged breach of fiduciary duty in relation to 1MDB.

Bersih urged the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) to investigate the police for allegedly harassing the electoral reform group.

The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ordered dance producer Bilqis Hijjas to enter her defence on insulting behaviour by dropping yellow balloons with the words "Free Media", "Democracy" and "Justice" on the prime minister's event at a shopping mall in 2015.

The government banned the book "Islam without Extremes: A Muslim Case for Liberty" by Mustafa Akyol after earlier detaining the Turkish author for speaking about Islam in Malaysia without a permit.

Najib's allocation for MACC

Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching cirticised Najib for announcing a RM5 million allocation for the MACC, pointing out that this only came after a budget cut of a similar amount for the MACC.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng urged Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman to lodge a report with the MACC over his claim that an operative on behalf of the government had offered him RM5 million to quit his party.

Syed Saddiq said he will lodge a report on the alleged bribery as well as on threats that he had received.

Organiser of the German Food and Beverages Festival said it is awaiting advice from the authorities after the event was left in limbo due to protest by conservative groups.

Secular group Bebas submitted a memorandum to the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council urging for a similar event at 1Utama shopping centre - the Oktoberfest 2017, to be allowed to proceed and not bow to demands by conservative groups.
