Johor sultan ends laundrette saga

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar ordered a Muslim-only laundrette in Muar to stop its controversial policy or risk being shut down, stressing that Johor was not a Taliban state.

The owner of the laundrette apologised and removed the notice that stated that it only catered to Muslim customers.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak said the apology should be well received.

Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching mooted an anti-discrimination law in the wake of the laundrette incident.

Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) chairperson Razali Ismail warned the government that the country was drifting towards extremism.

PAS submitted a memorandum to the Petaling Jaya Municipal Council (MBPJ) urging the local council to reject the application to hold a beer festival at 1Utama shopping centre.

A separate non-halal German "food and beverages" festival was approved by the Klang Municipal Council.

MyPPP president M Kayveas urged people to put their differences aside over the beer festival, saying that our Asian values do not promote public festivals of intoxicating beverages.

Ten other people were slapped with summonses in Kelantan by religious authorities for wearing short pants, tight clothes or failing to wear the headscarf.

MAS CEO rebuts Dr M

Malaysia Airlines (MAS) chief executive officer Peter Bellew denied former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s allegations that the airline was trying to please Najib at the expense of business considerations.

He also welcomed the appointment of Habibul Rahman Kadir Shah and former Telekom Malaysia group CEO Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa to the MAS board. Habibul is seen as a close associate of the prime minister.

EC chief Mohd Hashim Abdullah dismissed proposals to allow East Malaysians to vote for their home constituencies while residing in Peninsular Malaysia, where they are working or studying.

He also said the EC only invited election observer groups on a reciprocity basis.

The Selangor government's bid to obtain the addresses and locality of 136,272 alleged dubious voters was rejected by the Federal Court.

PAS information chief Nasrudin Hassan accused DAP of trying to get at PAS due to its plans to field candidates in Kelantan.

Will MAC weed out GE candidates in 1MDB scandal?

PKR president Wan Azizah Wan Ismail dismissed the idea of Pakatan Harapan submitting its candidates to the MACC for vetting, accusing the commission of selective prosecution.

Wan Azizah also revealed that Bank Negara had responded to the opposition's memorandum on 1MDB, stating that the fund and its associated entities were fined a total of RM115.8 million, which she said was inadequate.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said the DAP will consider submitting its general election candidates for vetting if MACC rules out candidates who are involved in the 1MDB scandal.

The MACC detained the political secretary of a federal ministry over a bribery case involving RM40 million.

The price of RON95 and RON97 petrol fell by three sen to RM2.16 and RM2.46 per litre respectively. The price of diesel went up by two sen to RM2.12 per litre.
