A video of a Road Transport Department (RTD) officer conversing in Mandarin with two Chinese nationals has taken the internet by storm.

Uploaded yesterday on the Siakap Keli Facebook page, the one-minute 37-second clip has thus far garnered 3.5 million views, over 100,000 reactions and more than 40,000 shares on Facebook.

RTD Perlis Assistant Enforcement Officer Nur Syafiqah Azaman, 23, was seen in the clip speaking comfortably with the two Chinese men, who could understand neither English nor Malay.

The young men had come to the Perlis RTD office to inquire about procedures pertaining to the purchase of a second-hand vehicle, reported Oriental Daily.

In response, Nur Syafiqah explained to them directions to the nearby Puspakom, as well as details about obtaining car insurance and road tax - all in Mandarin.

The daily added that Nur Syafiqah, whose mother is Chinese, had attended a Chinese vernacular primary school as a child and continues to converse with her mother and younger brother in Mandarin.

She began work at RTD Perlis in May, but this was the first time she has reportedly encountered foreign customers in the course of her work.

Following the circulation of the viral video, newly-appointed RTD director-general Shaharuddin Khalid invited Nur Syafiqah to Putrajaya for a meeting scheduled for tomorrow, reported Sinar Harian today.
