KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines you may have missed yesterday, in brief.

Dr M drubs Trump

Dr Mahathir Mohamad has chided US president Donald Trump, saying if he wanted a role in GE14, he could endorse Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib, who is scheduled to meet Trump on Sept 12, said he will talk about Malaysia-US economic ties, as well as the fight against the terrorist Islamic State.

Najib said GE14 could be held at any time, and that the Umno general assembly this year could be postponed if necessary.

Anwar denies forex cover-up

Former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim rejected the “malicious insinuation” that he wanted the Bank Negara foreign exchange (forex) losses swept under the carpet.

Anwar also wants a chance to defend himself in the royal commission of inquiry (RCI) on the forex losses.

Mahathir, who was prime minister at the time of the forex scandal, says the RCI's findings will not affect his leadership position within Pakatan Harapan.

A former foreign exchange (forex) dealer with Bank Negara told the RCI that he had handled up to US$800 million a day in trading under the instruction of then Bank Negara assistant governor Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Najib said the government is waiting on public feedback before deciding whether to hold a separate RCI on the Memali incident.

Umno minister Nazri Abdul Aziz said the RCI was necessary, as police had used excessive force against the villagers in that incident.

PAS wants Azmin's seat back

Selangor PAS said that it wants the Gombak parliament seat, currently held by state menteri besar Azmin Ali, back.

PAS also said that it was ready to take on both BN and Pakatan Harapan in multi-cornered fights in Selangor.

Amanah Youth deputy chief Faiz Fadzil likened such a stance to PAS becoming a "suicide bomber".

PKR Wanita Chief Zuraida Kamaruddin brushed off PAS' comments, and maintained that talks need to be held in accordance with the example set by former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Mahathir is reaching out to supporters of former MIC president G Palanivel in a bid to secure support in GE14.
