1MDB goes into technical default

1MDB failed to meet the deadline to pay International Petroleum Investment Company US$602.5 million as part of a settlement struck in April.

IPIC in an announcement to the London Stock Exchange said 1MDB had five days of grace period to pay up or face further legal obligations.

A report by The Wall Street Journal claimed the United Arab Emirates ambassador to the US, Yousef Al Otaiba, used his influence to support a loan for 1MDB and was paid around US$16 million.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang said attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali should make a special submission to the US in relation to the Department of Justice's civil forfeiture suit on 1MDB.

Dr M zooms in on Zahid's bank account

Dr Mahathir Mohamad claimed Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had RM230 million in his bank account in an asset declaration made to Mahathir when he was prime minister.

Mahathir's salvo came after Zahid raised the former's Indian ancestry, which also prompted a protest by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Youth outside Parliament.

MIC Youth higher education bureau chief Ganesan Seerangam slammed Zahid for playing the race card in his attack against Mahathir.

Zahid's aide Ibrahim Yahya said his boss had wanted to highlight that Mahathir was not a true Malay and had not intended to insult Indian Muslims.

Jaringan Melayu Malaysia (JMM) reported social activist Marina Mahathir to the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi) for "liking" a Twitter post that was favourable of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transexual (LGBT) community.

Finance minister blamed for failed Bera Hospital

The Auditor-General's Report 2016 highlighted the finance minister's role in getting an unqualified contractor to build the RM88 million Bera Hospital, which resulted in failure to complete the job.

The audit report also found that 1Malaysia products sold in stores run by a government-owned company, Syarikat Pemasaran Karyaneka Sdn Bhd, suffered poor sales, resulting in losses of up of RM380,000.

The report also found that the Home Ministry had repeatedly extended the contract of a ferry company despite it flouting contractual obligations, costing the government millions of ringgit in losses.

Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad said he was thankful to have survived his first year in the position.

Dzulkifli also revealed the MACC had arrested a former aide to the former Felda chairperson, Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, to assist an investigation into Felda's purchase of a hotel in Kuching.
