Ex-AG's advice on 1MDB to Apandi

Former attorney-general Abu Talib Othman said current attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali should be more cooperative with US authorities in the 1MDB case.

Abu Talib also advised former chief justice Arifin Zakaria to clarify the appointment of current Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif and Court of Appeal president Zulkefli Ahmad Makinudin as additional judges.

An alleged charge sheet against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was raised before the Federal Court during an application for leave to challenge the AG's refusal to charge the prime minister over the multi-billion ringgit deposits in his personal bank accounts.

However, the Federal Court dismissed the case. Former Malaysian Bar president Steven Thiru said the Federal Court's refusal to grant leave to challenge the attorney-general's discretion was not in line with Commonwealth practices.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed the prime minister to intervene in former law minister Zaid Ibrahim's suit seeking to compel Najib to disclose his bank statements.

The dead can't escape taxes

The Inland Revenue Board said it is legally empowered to collect outstanding taxes even after someone has died.

Contributors of G25's book on Islam titled ‘Breaking the Silence: Voices of Moderation - Islam in a Constitutional Democracy’ criticised the government's decision to ban the book as "illogical" and "ridiculous".

Gerakan Deputy Youth chief Andy Yong urged the government to review the book ban.

Fatwa and civil courts

PAS' Kuala Nerus MP Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali proposed a new law that would make fatwas binding on the civil courts with regard to issues relating to Islam.

The National Registration Department (NRD) said it will not implement the Court of Appeal's ruling that the department was not bound by fatwas and therefore cannot prevent children born out of wedlock from carrying their father's name as it was appealing the case.

Muslim Lawyers Association president Zainul Rijal Abu Bakar claimed the landmark decision by the Court of Appeal could potentially destroy the institution of Muslim family.
